There are too many noise points in the image? Try using thermoelectric cooling technology to "cool down" the sensor!

Have you ever tried taking pictures of stars with your phone at night? The result is either a blurry mess or a screen full of colorful dots - commonly known as "snow noise". However, the deep-space photos taken by astronomy enthusiasts are detailed star clouds and a dark background, as clean as a painting. This relies not only on expensive lenses and post-processing, but also on thermoelectric cooling technology - it enables the image sensor to work stably at low temperatures and output clear, low-noise high-quality images.

I.How do image noise points form?

Whether it is a CCD or a CMOS image sensor, during its operation, it will generate a type of noise called "dark current" due to electronic thermal motion. This kind of noise is proportional to temperature in an exponential manner: for every 6-8℃ increase in temperature, the dark current almost doubles. In ordinary mobile phones or consumer-level cameras, the impact is not significant for short-time shooting. However, in long-exposure, low-light, and high-precision imaging scenarios (such as astronomical observation, fluorescence microscopy, industrial defect detection, etc.), even the slightest dark current will form a large number of random noise points on the image, seriously reducing the signal-to-noise ratio and even masking the key details in the image.

II. How does TEC help eliminate image noise?

To ensure image clarity, high-end imaging equipment typically integrates thermoelectric cooling chips (TECs) in the image sensor. The cooling chips are installed on the back of the CMOS or CCD chips: the cold surface is in close contact with the photosensitive chip, maintaining the temperature at 0 to 40℃; the hot surface is connected to an efficient heat dissipation system to promptly remove heat; combined with high-precision temperature control algorithms, it achieves ±0.1℃ high-precision temperature control.
• All-solid-state structure: no compressor, no vibration, avoiding interference with the precise optical system;
• Compact size: convenient for integration into compact camera modules;
• Precise temperature control: can set any target temperature and support both cooling and heating adjustments;
• Environmentally friendly and quiet: no refrigerant required, operating noise < 30dB, suitable for laboratory and medical environments.
Take astronomical photography as an example: when exposed for 30 seconds at a room temperature of 25℃, the image will be "overwhelmed" by color noise. However, by cooling the sensor to -15℃ using the TEC, the noise is reduced by more than 70% - the star points are sharp, the background is deep, and the image details are clearly visible. This is not only a leap in image quality, but also the key to successfully capturing celestial signals.

III. Applications of TEC in the field of high-end cameras

✅ Astronomy and Scientific Imaging
Professional astronomical cameras and spectrometers capture weak signals through long exposure. TEC can stabilize and cool the sensors to below -15°C, significantly reducing dark current noise and ensuring accurate and reliable data.
✅ Industrial Machine Vision
PCB defect detection, semiconductor wafer inspection, etc. require the identification of micrometer-level flaws. CMOS/CCD cameras using TEC technology can provide ultra-low noise images and have become a standard configuration for high-end vision systems.
✅ Medical and Life Sciences
Applications such as fluorescence microscopy, DNA sequencing, and endoscopy imaging require extremely high sensitivity. TEC active cooling can significantly improve the signal-to-noise ratio, facilitating precise diagnosis and scientific breakthroughs.
✅ Security and Special Monitoring

Infrared night vision and low-light monitoring equipment often need to work continuously for several hours. TEC can effectively suppress the accumulation of thermal noise, ensuring clear and usable images at night and enhancing the reliability of security monitoring.
